AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT

RDNA 1 mid-tier. 6 GB VRAM is the ceiling — fits 7B Q4 only with short context. No production ROCm support; Vulkan-only. ~20-30 tok/s on 7B Q4. The 'I have one in my 2020 build' audience — the answer is upgrade if AI is the goal.

Our verdict

OP · Fredoline Eruo|VERIFIED MAY 10, 2026
1.7/10

This card is for the operator who already has an RX 5600 XT in a 2020 build and wants to dip a toe into local AI without spending a dime. It is not a buy target; it is a "use what you have" option for lightweight experimentation.

On 7B Q4 models (~4.5 GB weights), the 336 GB/s bandwidth delivers roughly 25-40 tok/s, usable for chat but not real-time streaming. 6 GB VRAM fits that model with short context (2-4K tokens), but any larger model or longer context spills to system RAM, cratering performance.

What breaks: anything above 7B. 13B models are out of reach. Vulkan-only runtime means no CUDA ecosystem, no ROCm, and limited software support — many tools assume NVIDIA or AMD ROCm. Expect compatibility friction and no flash attention optimizations.

Pass if you are buying a GPU for local AI. For the same used price (~$140), an RTX 3060 12 GB offers double VRAM, CUDA, and much broader model support. The 5600 XT only makes sense if it is already in the rig and the budget is zero.

At ~$140 used, the price is low, but the VRAM ceiling and runtime limitations make it a poor value for serious local AI work. It is a stopgap, not a foundation.

›Why this rating

The RX 5600 XT earns a 3.5 because it can run small models at acceptable speeds for its price, but the 6 GB VRAM and Vulkan-only support severely limit its usefulness. It is a passable entry point only if already owned, not a card to seek out.
