ROCm 6.4 reaches vLLM feature parity on MI300X — production AMD viable

▼ WHAT HAPPENED

AMD's ROCm 6.4 release closes the remaining vLLM feature gaps for MI300X production deployments: continuous batching, prefix caching, FP8 quantization paths, and tensor-parallel sharding now match the CUDA implementation within 5-10% throughput. SGLang support also reached parity in the same release. The long-tail framework gap remains (TensorRT-LLM, ExLlamaV2 still CUDA-only) but for workloads on vLLM/SGLang, AMD MI300X is now a credible alternative to H100/H200 cap-ex.

**For cost-sensitive frontier deployments**: [MI300X](/hardware/amd-mi300x) at $15-20k vs H100 SXM at $22-25k used / $30k retail. With ROCm 6.4 closing the framework gap, the integration tax is now reasonable for vLLM/SGLang shops. **For cap-ex breakeven**: MI300X cloud rental on TensorWave/Hot Aisle at $2.50-4.50/hr vs equivalent H100 at $2.50-3.50/hr. If your workload runs on vLLM-ROCm without modification, AMD is now a real alternative. **Skip if**: your stack requires CUDA-only frameworks (TensorRT-LLM, ExLlamaV2). Don't fight the ecosystem. **Validate first**: rent MI300X for 1-2 weeks before cap-ex commitment. Test your specific serving workload — there are still edge cases on multi-card tensor parallelism that don't show up in synthetic benchmarks.
